On Wednesday 16th September 2026, I began studying The Master Key System by Charles F. Haanel.
Rather than treating it as another self-development book to read quickly and put back on the shelf, I decided to follow the system as it was intended—as a 24-part programme studied progressively over 24 weeks.
My approach is simple. I read one part each week, study the ideas and then practise the exercise associated with that section.
Today is Tuesday 29th September 2026, and I have reached Part 3, Day 1 of Week 3.
Already, I am discovering something important.
Personal development is very different when you actually practise what you read.
For me, this experiment is about much more than positive thinking. I want to develop greater discipline, concentration, emotional control and consistency—qualities that could potentially help me as I continue my journey from Security Guard to Financial Freedom.
My First Two Weeks Of The Master Key System

Week One Taught Me Physical Stillness
The first exercise sounded incredibly simple.
Sit still.
Yet doing it was much harder than I expected.
During my first attempts, I noticed how frequently the body wants to move. You adjust your hands, shift your legs, scratch an itch or change position almost automatically.
I continued practising.
After seven days, I became capable of remaining physically still for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
That might sound like a small achievement, but I see a much bigger lesson in it.
I gave myself an instruction and repeatedly practised following it.
Modern habit research provides an interesting parallel. Repetition in consistent contexts can strengthen associations between situations and behaviours, making repeated actions increasingly automatic. Research has also found that stable contexts can support greater automaticity and goal attainment.
Week Two Turned My Attention Towards Thought
Part 2 moved the challenge from the body towards the mind.
Instead of merely remaining physically still, I began observing my thoughts.
After practising for seven days, I found that I could watch my thoughts for several minutes at a time and deliberately try to return my attention towards more constructive thinking.
This does not mean unwanted thoughts suddenly disappear.
The value, for me, is becoming more aware that they are happening.
That distinction matters because modern mindfulness research also focuses on present-moment awareness and the ability to notice mental experiences rather than automatically becoming absorbed by them. Research suggests mindfulness practices may help with attention and some aspects of emotional regulation, although the evidence varies considerably depending on the practice and outcome being studied.
Two weeks into the experiment, I therefore have two foundations—stillness and awareness.
Now Part 3 takes the journey further.
What Part 3 Of The Master Key System Teaches

The Conscious And Subconscious Mind
Part 3 explores Haanel’s interpretation of the relationship between the conscious mind, subconscious mind and nervous system.
This needs some historical perspective.
The Master Key System originated as a 24-week correspondence course in the early twentieth century and was later published in book form. Its philosophy belongs largely to the New Thought tradition, combining ideas about concentration, subconscious influence, mental causation and what Haanel calls the Universal Mind.
Some of its anatomical explanations should therefore not be confused with modern neuroscience.
For example, Haanel associates the conscious and subconscious minds with particular nervous systems and gives the solar plexus a much broader mental and metaphysical significance than contemporary medicine does.
Modern physiology describes the autonomic nervous system in terms including the sympathetic system, associated particularly with responses to stress and danger, and the parasympathetic system, associated with “rest-and-digest” processes.
That does not make Haanel’s philosophy scientifically established.
It does, however, make his emphasis on the relationship between thoughts, emotions and physical states interesting to examine from a modern perspective.
Thought As Cause
One of the strongest themes running through Part 3 is Haanel’s belief that thought functions as a cause and circumstances emerge as effects.
I interpret this cautiously.
I do not believe that every event in life can simply be blamed on someone’s thoughts. Economic conditions, health, opportunity, other people’s decisions, luck and countless external circumstances clearly matter.
But thoughts can influence decisions, decisions influence actions, repeated actions influence habits, and habits can significantly affect long-term outcomes.
That interpretation gives the idea practical value without requiring me to assume that thought magically controls everything that happens.
The Solar Plexus Fear And Personal Power

Understanding Haanel’s Solar Plexus Idea
One of Part 3’s most unusual concepts concerns the solar plexus.
Haanel describes it as a central point for distributing energy and links it with the subconscious mind. His study questions state that resistant, critical and discordant thoughts—and especially fear—can interfere with this energy.
This is where distinguishing philosophy from anatomy becomes especially important.
The physical solar plexus, or celiac plexus, is a network of nerves in the abdomen. It should not scientifically be regarded as a magical manifestation centre capable of producing external circumstances through thought.
Nevertheless, the broader connection between mental stress and physical responses is real.
Stress can increase heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure while producing muscle tension as part of the body’s fight-or-flight response.
So while Haanel’s explanation belongs to the language and philosophy of his era, the broader idea that mental states and bodily states interact has a legitimate modern scientific basis.
Why Fear Matters To My Journey
Part 3 repeatedly returns to fear.
This is particularly relevant to financial freedom.
Fear can appear when starting a business, publishing content, investing, learning a new skill or putting your ideas in front of other people.
There is fear of failure.
Fear of criticism.
Fear of wasting time.
Fear of losing money.
And sometimes even fear of succeeding and entering unfamiliar territory.
My lesson from Part 3 is not that I should pretend fear does not exist.
It is that fear should not automatically make my decisions for me.
If I can notice fear, examine whether it is justified and still take sensible action, I retain control of the next step.
That is far more useful to me than simply repeating positive statements while doing nothing.
Why The Week 3 Relaxation Exercise Matters

Learning To Release Tension
The practical exercise at the end of Part 3 focuses on relaxation.
The objective is to become physically still and deliberately release muscular tension until the body reaches a deeply relaxed state. My source notes describe the goal as becoming quiet, restful and peaceful.
This is one area where Haanel’s century-old programme has an interesting overlap with contemporary relaxation practices.
Progressive muscle relaxation, for example, involves deliberately working with different muscle groups and releasing tension. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says relaxation techniques are intended to produce a relaxation response characterised by changes such as slower breathing and reduced heart rate.
Evidence does not support every extraordinary claim made in old New Thought literature, but research suggests relaxation techniques can help some people manage stress and anxiety.
Reading Is Not Enough
Perhaps my biggest lesson from the first three weeks is that knowledge without implementation has limited value.
I could read The Master Key System in a few days.
But that would defeat the purpose of my experiment.
I am deliberately spending a week with each part because I want to practise rather than merely consume.
This principle applies far beyond personal development.
You do not become a successful blogger by reading about blogging.
You do not build a successful YouTube channel by endlessly watching videos about YouTube.
You do not achieve financial freedom by collecting books about wealth.
Eventually, knowledge has to become behaviour.
That is why I intend to continue doing the exercises rather than racing towards Part 24.
What Week 3 Means For My Journey From Security Guard To Financial Freedom

Building The Person Before Building The Income
My ultimate goal is financial freedom, but increasingly I realise that money is only one part of the challenge.
I also need to develop myself.
If I want to create online businesses, build digital assets and eventually generate enough income to have greater control over my time, I need concentration.
I need patience.
I need consistency.
I need the ability to continue when results are slow.
And I need enough control over fear and distraction to keep moving forward.
That is where I currently see the greatest potential value in The Master Key System.
I am not studying it because I expect to sit in a chair, think about wealth and magically become rich.
I am studying it because training myself to concentrate, observe my thoughts, relax deliberately and direct my attention could potentially make me better at doing the real work required to change my circumstances.
My Week 3 Commitment
For the next seven days, I will continue working on the Part 3 exercise.
I will practise physical relaxation.
I will continue observing my thoughts.
I will pay greater attention to fear when it appears.
Most importantly, I will continue taking action towards my goals.
The first week taught me to control unnecessary physical movement.
The second taught me to become more conscious of my thoughts.
Week 3 is now challenging me to understand the relationship between thought, emotion, tension and behaviour.
There are still 21 parts remaining after this week.
I have no idea exactly how different I will feel when I eventually reach Part 24.
That uncertainty is part of what makes this experiment interesting.
What I do know is that I started on 16th September 2026, I have completed the first two weeks, and I am still moving forward.
Financial freedom will not be created by one book.
It will not be created by one thought.
And it certainly will not happen overnight.
But if I can become more disciplined, more focused and more consistent while simultaneously building assets, developing skills and creating new sources of income, then this 24-week experiment may become another useful piece of a much bigger transformation.
My journey is not about pretending that thoughts alone create success.
It is about learning to think better so that I can act better.
And then repeating those better actions long enough to discover where they can take me.
From Security Guard To Financial Freedom.
