How Do You Make Money From Blogging?

In this post I will explain how anyone can make money from blogging. You can follow the exact same formula used by others worldwide to create financial freedom using blogging.

For anyone asking the question “How do you make money from blogging?”, I will give you the blueprint to making money from blogging.

What Is A Blog?

A blog in the traditional sense used to be a website where an individual or a group of people would share updates on their lives or events. Theses could be personal updates or business related updates on a company blog.

The term blog is a truncation of the word “weblog”, it now encompasses a wide range of websites in various subjects. A website that has posts (articles) related to a specific niche can be referred to as a blog. There are still many personal and company blogs.

The emergence of niche specific blogs has taken blogging to another level.

What Is A Niche?

My definition of a niche is as follows “a niche is a segment of the population based on a specific interest”. This definition helps me to understand who I am writing my content for on my niche blog. It helps me to narrow down my target audience.

The purpose of my niche blog is to serve this specific group of people and get monetized for doing this. The important thing to remember is that you need to provide value before you can monetize the content.

When you are researching a niche to blog about, make sure that you are passionate about the niche. The niche you chose also needs to have buyers within it. If the people within your chosen niche are not buying anything, you will not make any from your blog.

What Is A Domain Name?

In simple terms a domain name is the address of your website or blog. The domain name of this blog is mujiburrahman.com

The www , http://, https:// are protocols that instruct browsers on how to connect to the specific domain name.

In the early days of the internet only 3 domain name extensions existed:

.com (commercial) was used by corporations.

.net (network) was used by companies involved in network services like Internet Service Providers (ISPs), technology companies and database providers.

.org (organization) was used by organizations in general but especially non-profits and charities.

This has all change now, there are a large number of domain name extensions available. Still the most popular extension to own is .com

You don’t need to be a corporation to own a .com domain name. I have registered mujiburrahman.com it’s my name with the .com extension.

Most niche blog domain names have the .com extension, unless the niche is specific to a particular country. For example, if the niche is specific to the United Kingdom , you can register a domain name with the .co.uk extension.

If you are working with a global niche, as opposed to a location specific niche, I would suggest that you register a domain name with a .com extension.

I not a big fan of hyphenated domain names, saying that, a had a few hyphenated domain names: global-income.com, scientific-health.com, uk-guide.com …

During the early days of the internet, people used to type in domain names into the browser address bar. It’s all click and tap these days. It’s best to keep the domain name as simple as possible.

I know mujiburrahman.com is not going to be easy to type in or remember, but that’s my name and my brand.

I try and stick to non-hyphenated domain names like mujiburrahman.com, digitalwealthbuilder.com …

What Is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is the process of linking your domain name to space on a web server to make it accessible on the World Wide Web (Internet).

You purchase web hosting space from a web hosting provider. There are instruction on how to get your domain name attached to the hosting space you purchase. The web hosting provided can do this for you.

Most web hosting companies also allow customers to register domain names and get them hosted as part of a package.

There are usually monthly or yearly charges associated with web hosting. There are various levels and specifications offered by web hosting companies.

You will have to take into consideration the amount of hosting space you need and the bandwidth you blog will use up every month.

A higher bandwidth will allow for more visitors to access your website and also visit it simultaneously. You can have your blog hosted on a virtual server (shared hosting) or on a dedicated web server, depending on the traffic your blog will be getting.

Make sure your web hosting company provided WordPress hosting and installation of this blogging software.

What Is WordPress?

WordPress is the number one self-hosted blogging software in the world. You will need to install WordPress on the hosting space that you have linked your domain name to, this will enable you to create a blog.

Once WordPress is installed, you will be able to customize the appearance and functionality of your blog using themes and plugins.

Most web hosts will install WordPress for you or have instructions on how to easily install it yourself. The actual WordPress blogging software is free to use. You may have to pay for premium themes and plugins to give your blog a professional look and functionality.

What Is Keyword Research?

Once your niche blog has been set up, you will need to attract visitors to it. You need to upload content to your blog in the form of posts.

These posts can be written on the blog itself using the built-in Word Processor provided with WordPress. It is these posts that are going to attract visitors to your blog.

You will need to provide valuable information related to your chosen niche in your blog posts. Randomly writing blog posts will not attract many visitors to your site.

You need to focus on getting visitors to your blog from searches carried out on Google. Your blog posts need to target specific keywords related to your chosen niche.

The process of finding highly targeted keywords that are not used by many websites in your niche, but have a high monthly search volume on Google is the goal of keyword research.

I am currently using Jaaxy to carry out my keyword research and then writing blog posts to get the keywords ranked on Google.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting a product or service for a company or individual with the goal of getting paid a commission once a sale is generated.

The commission (percentage) you will earn will be different for different affiliate programs. It is usually free to join affiliate programs. Some affiliate programs may require your blog to have traffic above a specified level.

If you have a well established blog in a specific niche with a large amount of visitors coming to it, you will have a good change of getting excepted as an affiliate by most programs.

Once you are accepted as an affiliate for a product or service, you will get your own unique link for promoting the product or service. The sales generated via your link will get tracked and resulting commissions will be paid to you.

There are also various affiliate networks that you can join to promote a multitude of products and services from various companies. The links will be provided by the affiliate network and also the commissions.

Amazon’s affiliate program is one of the easiest to get accepted into, even with minimal traffic to your blog. Affiliate marketing is big business and drives billions of dollars in sales every year. Some of the highest paid affiliate marketers earn hundreds of thousand dollars monthly.

Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to monetize your niche blog. Once the traffic to your blog picks up and there are links to relevant products and services in your posts, you will start making sales and earning commissions.

What Is Contextual Advertising?

Contextual advertising is the process of displaying relevant adverts on your nice blog. This is all automated and the adverts are more likely to be clicked as they will be relevant to the content of your posts.

The most popular contextual advertising program is Google’s Adsense. Your niche blog will need to have a significant amount of traffic coming into it to be accepted by Google for displaying AdSense adverts.

Every time an advert is clicked by a visitor to your blog, you earn a percentage of the advertising revenue charged by Google to the advertiser.

There are other contextual advertising programs that deal with blogs with high traffic volumes. One of these is MediaVine. Many bloggers report that it pays significantly higher than AdSense.

Once you have a large number of visitors to your blog, contextual adverting programs can earn you another source of passive income.
