I have been thinking about what I would have done differently, if I was starting out on my affiliate marketing journey again. In this post I am going to pass on 7 tips that will help you get started on your path towards becoming a successful affiliate marketer.
These are some of the things that I wish I had know before I got started on my affiliate marketing journey.
Know Your Target Market
You will need to know who you are going to be recommending products and services to. Visualize the person who is going to benefit from the information, products and services you will be offering.
Once you have the specific person in your mind, work on finding a group of people this person will belong to.
Are there a large number of people in the group who would be interested in what you have to offer?
Knowing your target market before you start on your affiliate marketing journey is really important. It will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run.
Find Your Niche
A niche is a group of people who are interested in a specific thing. You will need to find a niche to serve as an affiliate marketer.
Find a niche that is not to broad, let’s say that you have chosen “Sports” as your niche, this is too broad. You will need to narrow it down to a specific sport like “Football“. You can still narrow this down to the English Premier League.
The niche “English Premier League” still have a large number of people interested in it. All these people will be interested in football, but especially in the English Premier League.
Sports —> Football —> English Premier League
The above is just an example of drilling down a broad niche to find a more specific niche to work with. I don’t know how popular the above niche is or how many buyers there are within this niche.
You will need to do keyword and key phrase research to work out how popular your selected niche is. You also need to know if there are a large number of buyers within your selected niche.
Are people buying products and services using the internet within your specific niche?
Your goal is to recommend products and services as an affiliate to earn commissions. You will need to find the answer to the above question.
Create Your Own Blog
If you are serious about building up a substantial income from affiliate marketing, you will need to have your own blog. Don’t waste your time and effort promoting affiliate links without a blog. Use your time constructively to create content on your blog related to the niche you have chosen.
You goal should be to drive in visitors to your blog, so that they read the content and have products and services recommended to them via your affiliate links.
If they are interested in reading the content, they will be likely to purchase your recommended products and services. Not everyone will buy the products and services you are recommending, a small number will buy them.
Your affiliate commissions will be generated from the small number that click through and make a purchase. The more people that come to your blog, the bigger this small number and your commissions will become!
You can easily set up a self-hosted WordPress blog on Blue Host, for as little as $2.95 monthly. You can also get a Free Domain for a year included. Blue Host is ideal for getting started as a blogger on the WordPress platform.
If you don’t capture leads coming into your blog, you will be missing out on future commissions. Without capturing leads, you are relying on people coming into your blog and reading your posts and leaving. These people may or may not purchase anything. The chances of them coming back to your blog again is very low.
If they have not purchases anything, you have lost a highly targeted prospect. You may have many other products and services they may be interested in, but you cannot contact them again.
If you capture leads by using an autoresponder, you will have multiple chances of getting the visitors to view the information, products and services you are marketing.
The best way to capture leads is by creating an info product (e-book or video) that will genuinely help or solve a problem experienced by a large number of people within your chosen niche.
You will need to give this information away for free in return for the subscribing to your autoresponder. Once they join your autoresponder, they can get this information. They will also become part of your email list. You will be able to recommend other products and services to them as an affiliate in the future.
Join Specific Affiliate Programs
Join affiliate programs for products and services that will genuinely beneficial to the people within your chosen niche. It is better to work with a small number of affiliate programs that offer high quality products and services than numerous affiliate programs for shady products and services.
Your reputation and brand is at stake, chose the affiliate programs you want to work with wisely. You may be able to earn a sizable commission with some shady affiliate programs, but your reputation will be damaged.
I would rather work with reputable products and services to build up long term trust within my niche area. Look for affiliate programs that pay an ongoing commission to help you build up a substantial monthly passive income.
Take time to find affiliate programs that have been around for a long time. These programs will enable you to build up a sustainable monthly income from affiliate commissions.
Drive Organic Traffic To Your Blog
The best traffic is organic traffic from google search listings. You need to work on getting specific keywords and key phrases ranked on google to drive in organic traffic to your blog posts.
Take time to learn SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to help you write posts that will get ranked on google and drive traffic to your blog.
Organic traffic is better than paid traffic, as the people that are clicking through to your blog posts are truly interested in your content. These highly targeted visitors to your blog will be more likely to purchase products and services than visitors coming from paid traffic sources.
Building up organic traffic takes time and effort. Once a steady flow of organic traffic is established, it will continue to flow in for a long time. The initial work in building up organic traffic is hard and time consuming, but it becomes a free source of highly targeted traffic after that.
Use Autoresponder Follow Ups
Once you have a large number of subscribers on your email list, you will be in a position to earn money on demand.
You will be able to offer specific products and services to your subscribers and earn commissions from the sales generated. A small number of subscribers on your email list will buy the product or service your are offering as an affiliate, earning you commissions.
Sometimes it takes up to 7 follow up emails for someone to purchase a product or service. You can continue sending follow-up emails explaining the benefits of the products or services you are marketing as an affiliate.
You should build up rapport and trust with the subscribers on your email list by offering the information that is of real value to them.
GetResponse is one of the most popular autoresponders used by bloggers. You can get started for free and opt for a paid membership as your list grows beyond 500 subscribers.
You can also brand yourself or your blog using your follow-up emails by offering high quality information for free. Once you have built up trust, you can recommend products and services that are of real value.
